INTRODUCTION
TO HORSEMANSHIP
This class is designed to teach students the basics in horsemanship
beginning with safety on the ground. The student will learn how to safely handle a horse, catch, lead,
groom, saddling basics, mounting, steering, stopping, balance at walk and trot, un-tacking, cooling out, and releasing the
horse safely.
Grades will be awarded based
on the following process:
50 percent participation and attendance
25 percent written final exam
25 percent riding/handling final exam
The
student will be given a written booklet detailing the processes for safely and competently performing the skills taught in
class. Each student will be expected to be able to explain the process of catching, leading, grooming and
tacking up in preparation for riding, mounting, performing the movements, dismounting, un-tacking, cooling out, and releasing
the horse. All skills will be taught in a safety first method. Any deviation from these
methods will result in suspension from the class.
CLASS
FEE OF $200.00 IS APPLICABLE AND MUST BE PAID BEFORE THE END OF THE FIRST FULL MONTH OF CLASS TO RECEIVE CREDIT.
INTRODUCTION TO HORSEMANSHIP CLASS SCHEDULE

Day one: orientation: Handout packets,
sign waivers, safety rules explained, surveys, Barn tour, evaluation rides
Day two: Grooming demonstration and
practice
Day three:
Lead training and ground safety, first mounted lesson focused on mounting, Direction control, walk, safe
dismounts
Day four:
Natural horsemanship demo, mounted lesson focused on lateral balance, and Control at a walk, beginning
trot.
Day five:
Confirmation focused lecture on how a horse’s conformation affects performance and longevity.
Mounted work on balance at walk and trot
Day
six: Farrier science-the horse’s foot and how our maintenance affects the horse.
Mounted lesson on rider position and stability
Day
seven: Nutrition.
Day eight: Round pen demonstration and practice with student
participation
Day nine:
Movement patterns of the horse
Day
ten: The factors for useful longevity for our horses
Day eleven: Communication between horse and rider
Day twelve: Colors, markings and breeds
Day thirteen:
Tack, bits and equipment and their uses
Day
fourteen: First aid for the horse and rider
Day fifteen: disciplines, what equestrian sports are available?
Day sixteen:
Final exam, written and ridden application of skills learned
Mounted lessons will progress based on the ability of students on an individual basis.
Safety is our primary concern as you learn to ride. We will be using different exercises to help
you progress as much as is safely possible during this course. Lecture topics may change, depending on
the progress of the class and are at the discretion of the stables.
